4/21 UPDATE: Living room is killing in our poll, but fans have until midnight on Wednesday to let their voices be heard. If you have any ideas as to what furniture we should look at (i.e. couch, rug, table, etc) for either room, leave a comment and we'll post options when polling closes.
Loyal readers, one of my fellow bloggers needs your help. Al has a beautiful condo with a stunning view of Lake Michigan, but there are two things missing--a wife and furniture. I can't help him with number 1, but I am starting a campaign to rectify number 2.
Chain of events when moving into a new place:
Normal
1. Rent/Buy place
2. Buy furniture
3. Move in
Al Waris
1. Buy place
2. Move in
3. ???
I can't help but think that he's skipped a vital step in the living space chain of events. Al has a mattress, an old TV, and 2 folding chairs (one of his folding chairs acts as a coffee table in the bedroom, so he only has one effective chair). We've been giving him grief for the past two years to furnish his place, but it's fallen on deaf ears. So, I'm hoping this post will serve to shame him into transforming his empty apartment into a hoppin' pad or at least persuade him to buy a couch. I'm tired of doing 10 minute rotations on the folding chair every time I visit. So, I put it to you, Al fans--what room should he furnish first (vote in the poll on the main page)?
Bedroom*
Living room*
Once we have a decision, we'll post options for beds, couches, TV's, etc.--you know, the normal things people own.
Also, if anyone has recommendations for hip furniture retailers, please post those in the comments. Please do not say Ikea, which literally translates to "most miserable place on Earth" in Swedish, as I have vowed to never again step foot in one.
*I found these pictures in a web album Al posted in May 2005 entitled "Condo before furniture."

Couple of things:
1. If anyone knows a single, attractive female interior decorator, we may be able to kill 2 birds with one stone
2. We should probably recommend Al to HGTV or TLC for one of those programs that re-decorates houses if this campaign doesn't work
I vote for the bedroom! No self-respecting female in her twenties will want to stay on that mattress for long!
Its not just a mattress. There's a bed frame below it.
1. I think that all our female readers are attractive, and greatly interiorly decorated. Anyone of them should be fit for the business.
2. I am positive this campaign will work... so there is no need for desperate programs.
Jane, let's not limit Al's potential mate to her 20's. We need to cast a wider net than that. Also, in consultant speak, "self-respecting" is a "nice to have" not a "need to have."
I'm going to go with living room first. The perfect gal for Al Waris wouldn't make a bee-line for the bedroom. It's all about fore-foreplay. First, Al has to get her past the bedroom door.
Recommended stores: Dania (that's where SaiKo got his fab apt furnishings), there's plenty of expensive places up in my 'hood, and Craigslist.
I actually went to Dania about 18 months ago. I liked something but they said it was a 3 month wait to get it in the color I wanted and I just couldn't wait that long. 18 months later...
living room for sure: thats where not only "self respecting" female companions will first set eyes, but also Al's numerous gentlemen & non love interest lady friends will set foot.
I think this campaign is the way to go. I say start with the living room - once he wins her heart in there, she won't care what the bedroom looks like.
1. Can I be the librarian/secretary for this campaign??
2. I think you need to post a missed connection on Craig's List about this.
Sure, Heather, you can be both librarian and secretary. Your first task is a "get out the vote" effort. We need more than 9 votes to make this most important decision. After that, we'll need help picking furniture for people to choose.
Living room since Al isn't likely to get anyone into his bedroom until his living room doesn't say "RUN AWAY"
I'm with the living room crew. Regardless of the girl's morals, she is going to see the living room at some point during her visit. What is more off-putting, a low bed, or 2 folding chairs. I suggest he go to Roy's Furniture at sheffield and altgeld, decent furniture and good prices, provided he can wait 6 weeks for delivery.
Living room of course. I will never go to Roshan's bedroom so I guess I am being selfish.
And Roshan buy some snacks other than potato chips.
